Mia and Courn

Mia and Courn have been best friends since meeting in high school in Neskowin, Oregon. Their bond began with their shared passion for the arts, intentionally crafted things, and combined creative ambition. As a team, they diligently worked to move to Portland for university. It was in Portland that their work in graphic design expanded, leading to both of them working as multidisciplinary designers. Living and working together has allowed them to continuously support their artistic endeavors.

MIA AND COURN

ABSTRACT

Photo Series

A few years back, Mia and Courn began a design/craft business where they sold handmade dog bandanas through a viral social media account. Both Mia and Courn have cited their ability to pick up slack for one another, which has ultimately allowed them to be successful friends and business partners. Their photo series is dedicated to the balanced and supportive nature of their relationship, and how those values have manifested into their creative pursuits. One of their objects that is focused on in the still life is their sewing machine, from the business they founded and managed together.

“I feel like we’ve always had similar goals in life. We both have been very school motivated. I definitely feel like it was something we bonded over, you know, “Ra-ra, we’re gonna do these great things, we’re gonna go to college”.”

“I think she’s probably helped me the most with shifting my philosophies and beliefs for the better. She helped me with things like reducing the stigma around mental health, or just being mindful of your body and taking care of yourself without feeling guilty about it. I feel like before I was very closeted and didn’t value self-care. But I know now I should have pride in myself and be kind to myself. She’s changed my philosophy so much these past years, so drastically. I feel like a different person because of Mia, a good one.”

“I mean we started a business together, and we bought a sewing machine together. We have all of the fabric we bought together as well. So we have this whole cabinet dedicated to us. I think we both have these artistic abilities but we also like the idea of monetizing those skills. ‘How can we make this hobby more legit?’”

“I feel like we've been around each other for so long, it feels as if almost every object that I own is in some way touched or impacted by Mia.”
